Despite the war, Ukraine's agricultural sector continues to provide the majority of foreign exchange earnings in Ukraine and is one of the key sectors for reform and attraction of public and private investment. However, the agricultural sector faces several challenges, which, if not addressed, could hinder this. In addition to the full-scale invasion and its consequences for agriculture, we are talking about the Free Trade Agreement with the EU, which will expire on June 5 this year. At this point, the scenario for the industry may depend on its extension. At the same time, Ukraine sees several possible solutions to this problem, and work is already underway in some areas, including in the EU.

EU office of Ukrainian agribusiness starts operations in Brussels
Ukraine’s agricultural sector has established its permanent presence before European institutions in Brussels. As of today, October 2, the EU office of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB), a business association representing leading Ukrainian agricultural companies, becomes officially operational in the European Union's capital. The office will be led by Nazar Bobitski, a former Ukrainian diplomat and experienced expert on EU trade policy and regulation.

According to the forecast conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development as well as the World Food Programme, the global meat production will increase by 12% within the next 10 years. The increase will mainly take place in developing countries such as Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Pakistan and Turkey.

Import of butter has increased 7.7 times since the beginning of the year
In January-June 2020, dairy products were imported to the amount of USD 137 million which is 2.6 times more than over the same period last year. The increase of supplies to Ukraine from abroad took place in all groups of dairy products. Supply of butter grew more than 7.7 times (+6.5 thousand tons) whereas milk and non-condensed cream grew 5 times (+5 thousand tons).

In April-May 2020 export of nitrogen fertilizers exceeded import by 2.5 times
Ukrainian producers of nitrogen fertilizers are competitive both in the Ukrainian market and in the world market as well. Thus, according to the State Customs Service from July 2019 to May 2020 the net export (surplus of export over import) of nitrogen fertilizers (group 3102 UK TZED) exceeded USD 70 million. In this regard export reached USD 247 million and import amounted to USD 176.
