The Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB) is initiating a collaboration with NASA Harvest as part of work on estimating the production of major agricultural crops in Ukraine using satellite data

UCAB is pleased to announce this strengthening of international partnerships. Together with NASA Harvest, we plan to work on improving the estimates of production, area, and yield of major agricultural crops during the war, both in territories controlled by Ukraine and those temporarily occupied. This cooperation will not only help us better understand the significant changes in agricultural cultivation and provide transparency for agricultural markets but will also promote advances in technological approaches based on satellite data and machine learning for monitoring Ukraine's agricultural landscape.

Thanks to advances in satellite imagery NASA Harvest has been able to use these technologies to monitor the conditions and trends in agriculture from the vast areas that are inaccessible due to the full-scale war with Russia. This is extremely important for the industry as a whole, and particularly for understanding, damages and losses and for post-war recovery.

"We are committed to doing everything possible to provide the agricultural sector with high-quality analytics, and we are thrilled to have the support of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club, a key player in the Ukrainian agricultural market, on this journey. We hope that UCAB's expertise will not only support existing NASA Harvest projects in Ukraine but will also lay the foundation for the implementation of these practices in the country's internal processes, to develop the Ukrainian agricultural sector," says Alex Olin, Manager of Strategic Partnerships at NASA Harvest.

At the same time, thanks to the wide regional distribution of UCAB member companies, there is an opportunity to share valuable local expertise and hard-to-access field data. This approach ensures confidence in the quality of the research conducted and the subsequent assessments made based on remote sensing.

Moreover, promising areas of cooperation between UCAB and NASA Harvest include:

  • Cooperation with UCAB partners to enhance NASA Harvest’s crop estimates that are provided to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
  • Involvement of agricultural experts in ground data collection.
  • Involvement of students from the educational program "AgroKebety" in the NASA Harvest Ukraine agricultural assessments.
  • Deepening of cooperation in the field of sustainable agriculture.

"Collaborating with NASA Harvest is a valuable experience for the Association and opens new opportunities for the Ukrainian agricultural sector. An international approach to issues of global food security and agriculture will enhance the sector and provide thorough analytics, which will be useful on the path to recovery and European integration. We thank our partners at NASA for their readiness to work together on improving market transparency for conducting agribusiness in Ukraine," adds Oleh Khomenko, Director General of UCAB.

The Association is grateful for the trust and recognition of UCAB's activities by such a significant international organization as NASA Harvest. We hope to justify the responsibility entrusted to us and together promote the implementation of satellite observations for the benefit of food security, agriculture, and the sustainable development of the environment.

NASA Harvest is NASA’s Global Food Security and Agriculture Consortium. Since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NASA Harvest has been assisting the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine with production estimates both on free and occupied territories. The global mission of NASA Harvest is to enable and advance adoption of satellite Earth observations by public and private organizations to benefit food security, agriculture, and human and environmental resilience worldwide.
