On March 18, the European Parliament held hearings for the first time since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion on the benefits of the EU-Ukraine agricultural trade for Europe. The event, organized under the auspices of MEP Karin Karlsbro, brought together European agro-food industry associations, MEPs, representatives of the European Commission, and EU member states to discuss the benefits of importing Ukrainian agricultural products.

Free trade agreement with the EU and the use of innovations. Ukrainian agricultural sector can contribute to EU food security and increase GDP
Despite the war, Ukraine's agricultural sector continues to provide the majority of foreign exchange earnings in Ukraine and is one of the key sectors for reform and attraction of public and private investment. However, the agricultural sector faces several challenges, which, if not addressed, could hinder this. In addition to the full-scale invasion and its consequences for agriculture, we are talking about the Free Trade Agreement with the EU, which will expire on June 5 this year. At this point, the scenario for the industry may depend on its extension. At the same time, Ukraine sees several possible solutions to this problem, and work is already underway in some areas, including in the EU.

In the agriculture and fisheries sector, the implementation of the overall strategic objectives has increased from 63% in 2022 to 74%, while in the field of food safety, veterinary, and phytosanitary policy, progress has risen from 72% to 83%.

The agricultural sector after three years of war: today's challenges and plans for recovery

Its share in wheat exports was 10%, barley 15%, and sunflower oil production 47%.
