Ukraine: Ministry of Transport proposes to construct new port at Danube entry

Ministry of Transport and Communications of Ukraine proposes to construct new port at Danube entry, reported Igor Urbanskiy, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications of Ukraine.

According to him, the sea trading port Reni would lose its importance.

I. Urbanskiy said that this is a geopolitical question. Previously, they gave 600 m to the Romanian side and didn't receive instead free access for motor road and rail way road. So, I. Urbanskiy considers that possibilities of Reni port are exhausted and the construction of new entry port, that is supposed to connect channel with Danube in Vilkovo region, is of current importance.

According to Ministry's estimates, construction works may begin in 2 years. The period of construction would total 5 years, the total cost of works is estimated to the sum of $3.6 billions. The project transshipment capacity of new port will total 50 mln tonnes.

I. Urbanskiy also reported that they plan to create an international consortium for the port construction.
