Due to unfavourable weather conditions in July-August in a number of regions of Ukraine, UCAB reduced the forecast of gross harvest of late crops.
In particular, with regard to corn the gross forecast decreased from 35.1 million tons to 32 million tons. This calculation is based on the average expected grain yield of 61 c / ha when the harvesting area is 5.25 million ha. Adverse conditions have developed almost throughout Ukraine, but the largest reduction in expected harvest has taken place in Cherkasy, Vinnytsia, Poltava, Kirovohrad and a number of southern regions. As a result of arid conditions and lack of moisture reserves in the soil, premature drying and maturation of plants are observed. Insufficient fullness and relatively smaller size of corncobs are often observed during field inspections.
Harvest expectations for sunflower decreased to 13.6 million tons in comparison with the forecast of 14.8 million tons in early June. The average yield is estimated to be 22 c/ha. The largest decline was due to the southern regions where production of this oil crop is concentrated and in the central regions as well.
Soybean production has also been adversely affected by weather conditions so the gross harvest is expected to be only 2.6 million tons, which is 30% less than last year. This significant decline resulted from reduced crop cultivation areas from 1.6 to 1.3 million hectares.
The calculation of forecast indices is based on the main results of survey of members of the UCAB agronomic committee carried out within the period of 1-3 September this year.
